A band of Afghan insurgents breached a U.S. outpost in Afghanistan Tuesday.
It happened at the Forward Operating Base Frontenac in the Arghandab River valley. The area is well known for insurgent activity.
According to U.S. officials, at least eight insurgents stormed the base.
"We now believe in that particular attack that there were no U.S. forces killed, but there were several wounded, less than 10 wounded and we do believe that the friendly forces were able to kill seven to eight insurgents," said Capt. John Kirby, Dep. Asst. Secy. of Defense for Media Ops.
Officials say they don't know how the insurgents got into the building, but initial reports indicate they may have had help from Afghan security personnel.
Uniformed Afghans, either posing as officers or actual members of the country's authority, have attacked numerous U.S. and NATO troops this year.
