Heatwave Gripping Australia

Australia is cooking in a dangerous heatwave, with many people heading to the coastline to escape the furnace.

The heat is so intense it's visible to the naked eye...

The country's food bowl is shriveling... wine grapes are drying into sultanas while they're still on the vine.

It's too hot to shop - the main street of Griffith is empty... But farmers don't get a day off just because its hot.

It was only slightly cooler in Sydney's west... where families would give anything just to get out of the heat.

Also on the look out for water are snakes... Reptile rescuers say they're getting up to 30 calls for help a day as snakes invade homes and businesses.

The coast is proving a welcome oasis in this searing heat... It was almost 10 degrees cooler here at Bondi today than it was in the city's west.

But it's Victoria and South Australia which are struggling the most.

The heat wave in southern states has seen electricity use soar to its highest level since the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.

And the weather bureau says the heat will continue to build until the weekend.
