Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center are monitoring two systems in the Atlantic, one of which could later pose a threat to the eastern coast of the United States.

As of 4am Central Time Tuesday Morning, Tropical Storm Sandy was about 350 miles to the south/southwest of Kingston, Jamaica.

After being stationary for a time, Sandy has begun to move north. It currently has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. It is expected to strengthen.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Jamaica, as well as a Tropical Storm Warning. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Haiti. It is currently expected to be a Hurricane tomorrow.

Beyond the immediate effects in the Caribbean, some computer models indicate that Sandy could affect the east coast, although specifics are not available at this time.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression 19 is likely to become Tony later today. It’s currently over 800 miles to the northeast of the Leeward Islands. Unlike Sandy, TD 19 is expected to curve back out to sea.
