Fishing Quotas Under Review

BRUSSELS (AP) - European Union nations are seeking ways to protect threatened fish stocks with tough catch quotas without killing fishermen's jobs.

EU fisheries ministers began a two-day meeting Monday to consider a recommendation by the European Commission of catch cuts of up to 50 percent for cod, whose numbers are quickly declining.

The traditional year-end haggling between the fishing industry and
environmentalists over limits usually dilutes the recommendations.

Belgian fisheries minster Kris Peeters, who is leading the meeting, says, "We will try to find an agreement, of course. But it is not going to be easy."

The Greenpeace environmental group had built a huge inflatable fishing vessel outside the meeting site as part of a demonstration
in support of quotas.
