CAIRO (AP) - Security officials say former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly has been arrested pending the completion of an investigation into corruption.
El-Adly, whose job gave him control over the 500,000-strong security forces, is widely blamed for the deadly brutality used by riot police against demonstrators in massive protests that began Jan. 25 and forced president Hosni Mubarak to step down Feb. 11.
The officials said el-Adly was arrested Thursday and would remain in custody for 15 days.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
News of el-Adly's arrest followed the detention of two other former ministers and a tycoon from Mubarak's ruling party, also over corruption allegations.
