A number of companies have begun experimenting with new technology that could significantly reduce the number of restaurant workers in the years to come.

Dancing robots stole the show as a national robotics competition kicked off in northeast china Tuesday.

Hundreds of students gathered in Harbin for the start of the 3rd Shanghai Taijing Cup national robot creative design competition.

Students each received a programmable robot and were required to create a series of complex instructions that sees their robotic partners perform a task.

Some chose to make their robots dance, both hip-hop and classical ballet, while others made their robots play football, play the drums or even do some massaging.

Some students also took a more practical approach and had their robots perform simple household tasks like sweeping floors or cleaning windows.
