Chinese Farmers Growing Love on Apples

With Valentines' Day approaching, apples bearing patterns and words expressing love are getting popular in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The love patterns and characters are grown onto the apples' surface by their growers, who covered the fruits in bags cut with patterns. The covered parts of the apples would remain pale yellow while exposed parts turned to red under the work of the sun.

Despite higher prices, the patterned apples have attracted numerous customers, especially the young.

"Patterned apples sell very well as the Valentines' Day is coming. Young people want special and romantic gifts like this. The patterns and characters express their best wishes," said Lv Junfei, manager of a local supermarket in Sanmen County of Zhejiang Province.

"It's practical to buy a patterned apple as a gift, because it's edible, and also speaks for you," said a customer.
