BEIJING (AP) -- A Chinese envoy says Beijing favors a solution to
Syria's ongoing violence within the framework of the Arab League
and based on the group's proposals already put forward.

The statement posted late Saturday on the Foreign Ministry's
website follows a meeting earlier Saturday between Chinese Vice
Foreign Minister Zhai Jun and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

It quoted Zhai as telling Assad that China was willing to work
with the Syrian government and opposition, the Arab League, and
Arab countries to find a solution.

The strong support for the league's efforts comes just two weeks
after Beijing drew criticism by joining Russia in vetoing a U.N.
Security Council resolution backing an Arab League plan that calls
for Assad to step down.
