A skiing competition was held for pets and their owners on Sunday (January 12) in China's central Henan Province, local media reported.

The official China News Service said 40 human competitors participated, bringing their pets ranging from furry dogs to animals less suited to freezing temperatures, such as turtles and ducks.

The event was sponsored and held by the local Sanmenxia City Mount Gan Ski Resort, the report added. Organisers said it aimed to "promote harmony between animals and humans".

Participants used skis to guide their animals, many of which were held on leashes, across the ski slope.

A yellow duck won the race by crossing the finish line first, the report said.

"I am really looking forward to other events like this. There are very few activities like this that are held with pets, and I just want to bring them out to have fun together," said one female participant who brought two of her dogs.

"It's really great. Life is just getting richer and richer every day, you know. Life is full of joy, it's really quite good," said another participant.

Although the report did not specify whether the duck won a material prize, it did state the owner and pet was given the "most positive spirit award."
