SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - Chilean officials are gradually restoring electricity after a power failure plunged nearly the entire population into darkness. People's nerves are already frayed after the magnitude 8.8 earthquake, and the outage didn't help. Officials say a transformer failure took down the power grid.
The director of the Interior Ministry's emergency office says a 1,200-mile stretch was affected.
Most of Chile's 17 million people live in that area. Many left their homes and went into the streets.
