Pope Under Fire For Transfer and Sex Abuse Letter

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Germany's sex abuse scandal is reaching the
Vatican and Pope Benedict.

The pope's former archdiocese says that while he was archbishop
a suspected pedophile priest was transferred to a job where he
later abused children. The archdiocese has stressed that Benedict,
who was archbishop of Munich from 1977-1982, didn't know about the
transfer.

The pontiff is also under increasing fire for a 2001 Vatican
document he wrote that instructs bishops to keep such cases secret.
At the time, he was in charge of the Vatican office that deals with
such crimes. Benedict was elected pope in 2005.

Allegations of abuse have also surfaced at the prestigious choir
that was led by the pope's brother from 1964 until 1994. His
brother says the allegations date from before he was choir
director.
