1.3 Billion Tons of Food Wasted Each Year

You might want to reconsider tossing out a half-eaten sandwich or slightly bruised banana.

A report by the United Nations found 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted worldwide each year. That's about a third of all the food produced for human consumption.

In rich nations, a combined 222 million tons is wasted a year.

According to the report, food waste is when edible food is thrown away.
