KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - The protests were sparked by a Florida pastor's plan to burn copies of the Quran.
They continued even though the pastor, Terry Jones, called off the burning, which has stirred outrage among Muslims worldwide.
The Taliban have been distributing pamphlets decrying Jones'
plans, claiming they showed the Americans were in Afghanistan to
wage war against Islam.
In the largest protest today, a police official estimated the crowd at more than 10,000. Police fired warning shots to prevent protesters from storming a provincial governor's residence.
Several hundred protesters rallied outside a major NATO base
north of Kabul. That protest ended peacefully after about an hour.
