RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Brazilian police say gunmen invaded a
luxury hotel in Rio de Janeiro and briefly took hostages. But they
have been freed and all suspects captured.
A police spokeswoman says about 10 heavily armed suspects from a
nearby slum had an intense shootout with police near the hotel,
killing one bystander.
The action happened Saturday morning in the Intercontinental
hotel in Rio's upscale Sao Conrado neighborhood. The suspects took
an unknown number of hostages, whose nationalities were not known.
The hotel is a favorite among foreign tourists.
The police spokeswoman says the hostages were freed after three
hours and the suspects surrendered. She spoke on condition of
anonymity, as she was not authorized to discuss the matter.
