As of Tuesday, October 29th, there are only 100 days until the opening ceremonies of the XXII Winter Olympiad in Sochi, Russia.
These Olympics mark the first Winter Games for the Russian Federation. Sochi defeated bids from South Korea and Austria to win the selection process in 2007.
Several new events will be taking place in the games. No entirely new sports have been added, but there will now be a team event in figure skating, women's ski jumping, a mixed relay event in Biathlon, a half-pipe skiing event as well as a team relay in luge and a pair of new events in snowboarding.
Due to the expanded tally of events, actual sport will begin the day before the opening ceremonies. On February 6th, 2014, there will be competition in figure skating, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding.
Looking at team events, the United States has already qualified for both the men's and women's ice hockey Olympic tournaments. Team USA has also qualified for the women's curling tournament, but must still qualify on the men's side.
As in recent years past, Nintendo and Sega will making a video game based on the event. This game, Mario & Sonic at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, will feature a variety of popular characters from both enduring franchises. This WiiU exclusive will allow players to compete in regular sports as well as “dream” events that add more fantastic elements and settings to the sports. For the first time, players can also compete online in a variety of events. This game releases in November 15th, 2013 in North America.
