Woman's Horse Dies from West Nile Virus

(Dothan,AL)—The West Nile Virus has hit more than six people in Alabama and now it’s spreading to animals.

Kay Rucks said blood tests confirmed that her horse, Toms, contracted the West Nile virus and was put to sleep in less than 24 hours. She said her horse showed little signs of being sick, other than not being able to properly use his back legs.

Horses do occasionally contract West Nile. In fact, veterinarians recommend an equine vaccine that said should be administered every six months.

Rucks said Tom was 13 years old and would have done anything to save him. She said she hopes her story will help spread the word about the virus to save horses and lives.
