Strong winds and heavy rains battered western Finland on Tuesday, cutting electricity supplies to thousands of households.

Winds gusting up to 24 metres a second caused havoc along the west coast on Tuesday, downing power lines and causing blackouts in thousands of homes.

Some 10,000 customers of the Elenia company lost power in the evening, with 4,000 Fortum customers in Sastamala also left rummaging for candles.

In Satakunta more than 15,000 households had supplies cut, while in Finland proper approximately 10,000 homes had no electricity for a time.
