VA Interstate 64 Slowdowns

Thousands of people were stuck, dead still, on Interstate 64 Monday as VDOT shut down a big part of the interstate to make some repairs.

And the same thing is going to happen today, and for most of the week.

A bulldozer is the reason that Interstate 64 is shut down in both directions.

This equipment is removing some unstable soil, perched above the interstate to reduce the risk of landslides.

It’s a rare occurrence, not something VDOT does every year.

As long as the equipment's moving, the cars are not.

The interstate has an almost *eerie* silence.

Several miles east, the cars are backed up, waiting their turn.

VDOT shut down the road an hour at a time, for several stretches during the day.

The work was news to most of the drivers.

Getting I-64 back to normal isn't going to happen for a while, either.

This work will continue until at least Thursday.

So, if you're headed over the mountain in this area, take route 250 instead.
