MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The Alabama Department of Corrections has confirmed the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating conditions at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka.

Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett says the department was given written notice of the investigation in March under the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act.

Tutwiler was scrutinized after a report issued by the Equal Justice Initiative in 2012 outlining officer-on-inmate sexual violence.

Department Commissioner Kim Thomas announced a plan of action to improve conditions at Tutwiler in January, and said sexual misconduct is the most egregious abuse of power and wouldn't be tolerated.

Tutwiler is a maximum security facility housing the state's female death row inmates.
