NASCAR, or the National Association for Stock Car Racing, was founded on February 21st, 1948. One of the main founders of NASCAR was William France Senior, a mechanic who lived in the Daytona Beach area of Florida.
The first NASCAR race took place in 1949, and the first NASCAR track opened with the Darlington Raceway in South Carolina the next year.
NASCAR, extremely popular in the southeastern United States, has gone international over the past few decades. NASCAR is primarily known for oval races, although it does have some road courses sprinkled into the various seasons.
