Much of this month college students will be traveling through our area making their way to the gulf coast.
News 4 rode along with one police agency on how they're cracking down on students headed to the beach.

Officer Derrick Mize is ready for his normal traffic patrols in headland, but because so many people are traveling this stretch of highway it won't take long to notice a driver not obeying traffic laws.

"We've been seeing a good amount of traffic coming through mid day to evening time frame, and they are committing a good amount of traffic infractions, and their being stopped by multiple agencies," Officer Derrick Mize of the Headland Police Department,

It is spring break time for many students across the country, and many who attend colleges near our area, know the perfect get a way is just an hour and a half from Dothan.

"The things we're looking for with the spring break traffic coming through is a lot of traffic violations trying to keep everybody safe, and we're also looking for any illegal narcotics, and alcohol coming through our jurisdiction," Officer Derrick Mize of the Headland Police Department.

And here recently those violations have picked up.

"The narcotics and alcohol have picked up quite a bit, along with the traffic violations," Officer Derrick Mize of the Headland Police Department.

Many are in a rush to reach their destinations. And when that rush involves impaired driving, things become more dangerous.

"People speeding, driving questionably, not using their turning signals, cutting people off, just driving erratically," Officer Derrick Mize of the Headland Police Department.

Driving that way will get you pulled over, a citation or vacation in a jail cell.

So if you plan on making your way to the beach for spring break, officers urge you to please obey traffic laws, because one thing is for sure the beach is not going anywhere.
