WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services committee, issued the following statement today after introducing a bipartisan resolution with Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) and Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the proposal for the Strategic Defense Initiative:
“It is an honor to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the proposal for the Strategic Defense Initiative. The vision that Ronald Reagan delivered appealed to the American public because it was a message of strength and duty to protect our nation. The drive to promote national security and peace through defense are pillars of our renowned Huntsville community. Our Redstone Arsenal is the foundation for our nation’s rocket technology and plays a critical role in furthering our ballistic missile defense and promoting necessary advancement in technology to counter potential threats and defend our allies abroad. The deployment of our current missile defense system that will interrupt and destroy incoming Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles is a monumental technological achievement. The Reagan vision has been made a reality. Senator Begich and I worked hard for full deployment of this system, but the deployment plans were reduced. The recent announcement by Secretary Hagel that we would fully deploy the system was good news, indeed.”
This bipartisan resolution with Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) and Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) commemorates President Ronald Reagan’s speech given on March 23, 1983. His landmark speech recognized the importance of Ballistic Missile Defense and offered support for national defense against adversaries. Sen. Sessions released a statement last week on the Administration’s proposal to fund the redevelopment of fourteen ground based mid-course missile interceptors, bolstering our homeland defense.
