Senate Chaplain Prays For Divine Help

WASHINGTON (AP) -- May God help Congress avert the fiscal cliff. That's the essence of Senate Chaplain Barry Black's prayer on the brink of a new year that's scheduled to start with across-the-board tax increases and spending cuts.

It's a dilemma Congress created for itself -- a scenario so unthinkable they assumed it would force them to negotiate a budget compromise. It didn't work, so the unthinkable is now staring them in the face.

As the Senate and House convened for a rare Sunday holiday session, Black asked God to "look with favor on our nation, and save us from self-inflicted wounds."

Black prayed, "As we gather with so much work left undone, guide our lawmakers with your wisdom."
