An enormous Russian military ship plowed into a crowded Baltic Sea beach on Sunday (August 18), startling sun-tanning vacationers who seemingly had no advance warning of the ship's approach to land.
Amateur video posted on Wednesday (August 21) on YouTube channel StockingtakeTV showed a Soviet air-cushioned landing craft "Zubr" ("Bison") cruising through the sea towards a popular beach near the Russian town of Kaliningrad near Polish and Lithuanian borders.
The ship did not seem to slow as it approached the shore, and plowed into land as beach-goers scrambled out of the way.
Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed the incident, as reported by local media, saying the ship and its crew had been carrying out a routine training exercise, adding that beach landings were a normal procedure, but that it was unclear what beach-goers were doing on the Baltic Sea shore on a warm day in August.
No beachcombers were harmed in the training exercise, the ministry confirmed.
