WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) praised the budget proposal released today by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI), saying the path to a balanced budget “reflects the good sense and financial prudence of hardworking Americans.”
The House Republican budget plan reduces federal deficits by $4.6 trillion over the next ten years though cuts to wasteful spending and reforms to spending programs that drive long-term debt. By finally balancing the budget, or bringing federal spending in line with revenue levels, the plan seeks to restore the financial confidence needed to strengthen the economy and grow jobs.
“Balancing a budget is a simple reality for everyday Americans, but a concept all too foreign to their government, unfortunately,” Rep. Roby said. “The plan outlined today by Chairman Ryan puts our budget on a path to balance through long-needed reforms to federal spending and a pro-growth tax structure that promotes economic prosperity. Our budget plan reflects the good sense and financial prudence of hardworking Americans.”
In contrast, the budget proposal being drafted by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), who chairs the Senate Budget Committee, reportedly calls for about $1 trillion in new taxes and never achieves balance. This is the Senate Majority’s first attempt to pass a budget since 2009.
“I’m disappointed by the irresponsible proposal Senate Democrats are putting forward,” Rep. Roby said. “With our national debt at $16 trillion and growing, it is honestly hard to understand why some think endless deficit spending paid for with more borrowing is a good idea.
“Today, Americans can see two different paths forward. One path reforms federal spending, keeps taxes low and balances the budget, leading to greater economic security and job growth. The other path raises taxes, continues reckless spending and never achieves balance, leading to continued economic uncertainty and government dependence.
“The people of Alabama’s Second Congressional District have made it clear to me they are fed up with Washington’s waste and recklessness. Hopefully, today we have begun a process that will result in finally passing sensible federal budget plan.”
