DOTHAN – Two Dothan-area high school students were recently recognized for their artistic talents through the 2013 Second Congressional District Art Competition.

The competition was sponsored by U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) as part of the national Congressional Art Competition. Submitted artwork from across Alabama’s Second Congressional District was displayed as a part of “Youth Art Month” at the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan.

Lucy Beasley, a recent graduate of Houston Academy in Dothan, won first place for her charcoal drawing titled “Las Manas.” Colby Carroll, a rising senior at Northside Methodist Academy in Dothan, was the runner-up for his torn paper collage titled “Contrast Self Portrait.”

“Congratulations to both Lucy and Colby for their tremendous artistic accomplishments,” said Rep. Roby. “ I also want to recognize the students’ art teachers, Anna Beasley at Houston Academy and Alison Beeson at Northside Methodist Academy, for their cultivation of the arts through the Congressional Art Competition. The Congressional Art Competition is an excellent program that promotes artistic achievement and a culture of creativity. I look forward to having Wiregrass artwork on display in our nation’s Capitol.”

The winning artwork will hang for one year in the United States Capitol alongside the winning pieces from other Congressional districts. The runner-up artwork will be on display in Rep. Roby’s Washington D.C. office. All submitted artwork was independently judged by an art professional.

Each spring, Members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsor a nationwide high school arts competition. The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide a process for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved with the competition.
