CAMP HILL, Pa. (Feb. 27, 2013) – The Rite Aid Foundation announced today a $15,000 grant to Impact Alabama. A non-profit organization based in Birmingham, Impact Alabama works collaboratively with higher education institutions and their surrounding communities in order to develop and implement social justice projects that work to achieve fundamental and systemic change throughout the State of Alabama. The organization will use the grant to expand FocusFirst, a vision screening program for children ages six months to five years, in Head Start classrooms and lower-income daycares across the state. The Rite Aid Foundation previously awarded Impact Alabama a $15,000 grant in 2010.

“Every child deserves quality healthcare, regardless of their environment or their family’s ability to pay,” said Gayle Rife, Manager of The Rite Aid Foundation. “The Rite Aid Foundation is proud to support Impact Alabama and their FocusFirst program, as they strive to provide to critical eye care services to the youth of Alabama.”

Impact Alabama was founded in 2004 Impact is Alabama’s first nonprofit dedicated to developing and implementing substantive service-learning projects in coordination with more than twenty universities and colleges throughout the state. Impact presents a vision of Alabama in which its young citizens understand, appreciate, and engage actively in civic and public life, contributing their diverse talents to solve local and state problems, influence public policy and pursue the common good. Impact has four “signature” initiatives: FocusFirst, SpeakFirst, SaveFirst, and CollegeFirst. For more information on Impact Alabama, visit www.impactalabama.org.

“Poor vision adversely affects tens of thousands of children in our state each year, largely due to poor public awareness about the importance of eye care in young children and the inability of children to recognize their own vision problems,” said Stephen Black of Impact Alabama. “These problems are heightened in families from facing financial hardships and a lack of access to appropriate medical care. Thanks to the generosity of The Rite Aid Foundation, we’ll be able to provide more vision screenings and treatment to young children across Alabama.”

Rite Aid operates one distribution center and 93 stores across the state of Alabama.

The Rite Aid Foundation, founded in July 2001, is a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to helping people in the communities Rite Aid serves. Since its inception, The Rite Aid Foundation has awarded grants totaling more than $14 million to approximately 1248 organizations in 629 communities.
