Power Rangers Celebrates It's 20th Year On Air With “Megaforce” Premiere

The enduring children's action show, “Power Rangers” kicked off its 20th year on American television over the weekend with the debut of “Power Rangers: Megaforce.”

The 20th season of “Power Rangers” debuted on Nickelodeon Saturday February 2nd. The “Power Rangers” phenomenon began in 1993, with the debut of “Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers” in 1993 on Fox Kids. The franchise quickly exploded in popularity.

The basic premise of “Power Rangers” as a whole involves a group of teenagers or young adults who are recruited to save the Earth—or other area—from evil villains of one form or another. They can transform into Power Rangers and call upon giant robots named Zords to fight off monsters and save the day.

Although it has changed hands several times—from Fox Kids to Disney and now Nickelodeon—it has remained on air in one form or another since 1993. Starting with “Lost Galaxy,” the series is “re-booted” with new main characters every year, although there some appearances from previous characters and continuity nods on occasion.

Much of the fight footage used in “Power Rangers” comes from a Japanese franchise known as “Super Sentai,” which has been in around even longer than “Power Rangers.” This footage is then spliced in with footage of English-speaking actors, although sometimes new fight footage is created. The English-speaking portions of “Power Rangers” are filmed in New Zealand.
