Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), member of the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee, released a statement regarding the recent news that the United States Postal Service (USPS) will be cutting Saturday mail delivery beginning August 1, 2013 in order to trim costs.

"While I understand the financial challenges currently facing the United States Postal Service and its need to reduce costs, many people rely on timely mail delivery in Southwest and Middle Georgia,” said Congressman Bishop. “The House of Representatives needs to pass a postal reform bill, much like the Senate did last Congress, so that the Postal Service can get their fiscal house in order and provide the mail service that all Americans require.”

“The United States Postal Service may be acting outside of its legal authority if it suspends Saturday delivery as previous language in appropriations bills requires six-day mail,” said Congressman Bishop. “It is vital that the USPS work with Congress to develop a plan that allows it to become more fiscally efficient while keeping the services that Americans rely upon.”

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Saturday mail delivery will soon be a thing of the past.

The Postal Service says it will stop delivering mail to homes and businesses on Saturdays, though the mail will still be delivered to post office boxes.

Post offices that are now open on Saturdays will remain open. And packages will still be delivered on Saturdays.

The move is aimed at saving about $2 billion a year.

The move accentuates one of the agency's strong points -- package delivery has increased by 14 percent since 2010. The delivery of letters and other mail has declined with the increasing use of email and other Internet use.

The change is due to take effect in August.
