A popular wiregrass attraction has more history than meets the eye.

"Columbia is a great, small town. A lot of people don't know about Columbia. There's a lot of good history here," Owner Todd Chandler said.

A piece of that history is Columbia Manor.

"It was built in 1864 and was turned into a quarantine place for a disease called Pellagra which is a vitamin deficiency syndrome," Chandler said.

Todd Chandler bought the house in 2009 from Mary Maureen, that's when he knew there was something different about the property.

"When she signed the paperwork the day we bought the house, she laughed and she said, "You tell that young man he's got the perfect place to do what he wants to do," Chandler said.

What he wanted to do was open a haunted house.

"After we got started remodeling we discovered, we are really not alone."

Chandler began researching the house and discovered the doctor who opened the sanatorium had died there.

But there's one thing he hasn't been able to find through research.

"Since we've tried to do research and can't find out who she is, we've nick named her Miss Claudia. Many of our residents have seen her and described her as a small, small child wearing a white flowing gown with a few hairs. I've never seen her personally but I've heard her," Chandler said.

The history speaks for itself in the eerie home, but Chandler says keeping an open mind is key.

"It's like I told them when I bought the house, you were here a lot longer before I was so you're welcome to stay as long as you want as long as you don't hurt anybody," Chandler said.

A dollar from each ticket to the haunted house goes back to the town's volunteer fire & rescue department.

It costs $10.00 for general admission, for hours and directions go to the Columbia Manor website at: http://www.columbiamanor.com/
