Ozark, AL - A first-year teacher is no longer with Ozark City Schools. Administration says he resigned after students found questionable material on his personal computer.

“Nothing was illegal that took place, but he felt like he needed to go ahead and resign,” says D.A. Smith Middle School principal, Danelle Peterman.

Brian Schenk was a first year art teacher at D.A. Smith Middle School in Ozark. Administrators say he, like many other teachers, allowed his student to use his personal laptop for class work. One day his students saw something leaders say was inappropriate.

“I can’t go into detail as to what they saw. But again, it wasn’t anything illegal. As far as the parents are concerned, I prefer to talk to parents directly to make sure they are comfortable,” says Peterman.

Schenk met with both the superintendent and principal.

“In the sense of his integrity, he felt resignation was what he needed to do,” says Peterman.

He resigned January 31st.

After asking WTVY’s Facebook friends how they felt about the situation, there was mixed reaction.

Misty says, “Teachers should not allow students to use their personal things. Just like they should not friend students on facebook. I just believe its inappropriate. As to whether or not they should resign thats something they have to decide for themselves.”

Stephanie says, “Total over the top. Teachers are allowed to have personal lives. He should get reprimanded; however, i am sure it was a lack of school funding that prompted the teacher to let the student use his personal property. He should have been more careful but should not have lost his job.”

Peterman says teachers are held to a different standard.

“If it had been an average person on the street, it would not have even been an issue, but because of the fact that teachers are held to a high standard he felt the need to go ahead and resign.”

Administration says at this time the class is being taught by a substitute with an art background. They are planning to hire another teacher as they move forward.
