CORDOVA, Ala. (AP) -- Opponents of a proposed new coal strip mine in Cordova are urging citizens to join them in writing letters to state regulators.
The commission issued a permit last October for the proposed mine, which would be operated by Reed Minerals of Jasper. Foes of the project want the commission to reconsider and say letters must be received by the end of January.
Reports say citizens and student activists were gathering Saturday at nearby Dovertown Freewill Baptist Church. They were urging residents to show up and write letters opposing the mine project to be sent to the Alabama Surface Mining Commission.
The Black Warrior Riverkeeper environmental group has filed a petition seeking to designate some areas of the Black Warrior River's Mulberry fork as unsuitable for mining.
