UPDATE: 10:00 pm
Ashford firefighters are cleaning up debris tonight.
Fire destroyed a Wiregrass Church this afternoon.
The building formerly housed the First Baptist Church of Ashford.
When firefighters arrived just before 2 pm, they say the flames had grown higher than the steeple and the roof had caved-in.
Eyewitnesses say the smoke is what first caught their attention.
A witness said, “We were sitting there at Boardwalk Cafe and got to smelling smoke and came out and the church was burning. It's really sad because you know, Ashford has got a lot of old antique buildings and when it comes to a church burning this quick, it's really sad to see it.”
Investigators are still trying to determine the cause.
The old First Baptist Church, located in Ashford, caught fire this afternoon at around 2 p.m.
The Ashford and Cowarts Volunteer Fire Departments are on the scene, along with the Dothan Fire Department.
At this time, police have blocked off downtown Ashford and are not letting anyone through.
Also, a lot of streets around the old church are closed.
News 4’s Matt McClellan is on the scene and will be going us live at
