Three major home video releases for the week are part of two popular television series, one in adventures in the final frontier and another in a land of magical ponies.

Here are some of the notable home video releases in the United States (Region 1) for the week of April 30th, 2013:

“Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 3” (Blu-Ray Only, CBS Home Entertainment) – The third season of the classic 1980s relaunch of the enduring “Star Trek” franchise includes many fan favorite episodes such as “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” “The Defector,” and 24 others. The episodes have been remastered in high-definition using the original film elements. The release also includes a wide assortment of extra content such as audio commentaries, a writer’s roundtable, a documentary about the season, a gag reel, original episodic promos and more.

“Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Best of Both Worlds” (Blu-Ray Only, CBS Home Entertainment) – This second Star Trek release focuses on the award-winning two-parter that included the season 3 finale and the season 4 premiere. The episode is re-edited into movie-length, with the most minimal of edits. In “Best of Both Worlds,” Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise face an invasion from their most formidable adversary yet, the part-human, part-machine Borg. This release includes exclusive commentary, a gag reel, a miniature documentary and an Ultraviolet version of the episode for viewing on mobile devices.

“My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic – Princess Twilight Sparkle” (DVD Only, Shout!Factory) – This single disc release focuses on the main protagonist of the hit animated series, Twilight Sparkle. Five episodes are included on the release, including fan-favorite “Lesson Zero” as well as three episodes from the most recent third season of the show. That includes the musical season finale, “Magical Mystery Cure.” All five episodes are presented in anamorphic widescreen, and extra features include a sing-along.
