JOHANNESBURG-- Former South African President Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95. Current President Robert Zuma confirmed the news in an address to the nation.

Mandela is best known for spending 27 years in prison before becoming South Africa's first black president. He won the Nobel Peace Prize along with former South African President F.W. de Klerk in 1993 for their work to end decades of apartheid in South Africa.

After announcing Mandela's passing, Zuma added, "He is now resting. Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."

CNN reports Mandela will have a state funeral. Flags will be flown at half-staff from Friday through the funeral.

Mandela battled health issues recently, which led to several hospitalizations. He died at his boyhood home the nation's Eastern Cape Province.
