Moulton Retiring as President of South Alabama

The longtime president of the University of South Alabama is stepping down.

Officials announced Gordon Moulton's retirement on Friday in Mobile. It takes effect July 1.

Moulton has been president at South Alabama for 15 years, and he has worked at the school since its founding in 1966.

He began as a faculty member in the business school.

During Moulton's tenure as president, South Alabama's enrollment grew by one-third to 15,000. It has expanded academic programs and campus facilities.

The vice president of student affairs, John W. Smith, will serve as acting president until trustees select Moulton's successor.
