Regina, a young octopus living in a tank in the Sea Life aquarium in Berlin, made her first prediction on Friday for Germany's forthcoming first game of the tournament against Portugal.

Regina apparently has predicted that Germany will beat Portugal in the debut of their Group G campaign on Monday in Salvador, Brazil.

The 15-month-old animal made her prediction by opening the lid of one of the two boxes installed at a small football goal inside her tank - each containing the same food (parts of two sardines) and covered with a team flag.

"Well, the first prediction is a win for Germany. This might happen ... And what we expect from her is that she has a certain kind of expertise. Some colleagues of you have called it earlier an "emotional intelligence," said Martin Hansel, aquarist at Sea Life Berlin.

Regina is an obvious reminder of Paul, the octopus who became a pop culture sensation by correctly predicting the outcome of several World Cup matches in 2010.

Elsewhere, in Germany's Muenster zoo, an armadillo named Norman rushed through his enclosure towards one of the three small footballs marked with the German flag to predict a win for Germany.

"The armadillo is the World Cup mascot. So, therefore it was obvious that we can use the armadillo as an oracle here in Muenster (zoo)," said Dirk Wewers, the curator at Muenster zoo.
