Molly, a drug that has become socially acceptable in the music scene, is now hitting the Wiregrass.
It's a drug with an innocent name, but comes with very dangerous effects.
"There are two Molly, one of the forms of molly has M-D-M-A, its methylenedioxymethamphetamine." Dothan Police Sergeant Jason Adkins said.
M-D-M-A is the active ingredient in ecstasy, and is what molly is made of.
This ingredient makes users believe molly is the purest form of ecstasy.
"What they are doing in the molly pills now they’re taking the M-D-MA in powder form and placing it in capsules or just in the powder form." Adkins said.
The drug is gaining popularity among teens and college students.
Many think because the drug is pure M-D-M-A, it’s safe, but officers say that’s not true.
“The federal government banned M-D-M-A, they made it a controlled substance for a reason and one of those is because it has effects on you that are above normal medicines like Tylenol, aspirin so on and so forth.” Adkins said.
And counselors in the area say teens trying new drugs are not uncommon.
“So our job is designed to deter them from those kinds of thoughts those kinds of things and kind of give them better solutions so they won’t have to make destructive decisions.” Dothan High school counselor Celeste Morehead said.
Molly is strong enough to give people horrible side effects and withdrawal symptoms.
And if you haven’t seen or heard from molly, officers say it's a good thing.
Dothan police officers say although Molly has been found in the Wiregrass area, It's not as large of a problem as it is in western or southern parts of the U-S.
