McGill-Toolen Storms Back to Stun Northview at South Regional Basketball Tournament

The Northview Basketball Team was seven minutes from the 6A Regional Final. McGill-Toolen had other ideas.

The Yellow Jackets overcame a 12-point fourth quarter deficit, storming back to beat the Cougars 59-54. With the win, McGill-Toolen advanced to face the winner of Blount and Baldwin County in the 6A Regional Final on Friday.

McGill-Toolen scored 26 points in the final period, including a 16-0 run to take the lead. However, the Cougars still held a one-point lead in the final minute, before Paul Burkholder drove the baseline for a lay-up to give the Jackets the advantage again.

Cougars guard Marquez White was then called for an intentional foul, and the Jackets were able to make free throws to secure the win. Jason Smith, and Auburn signee for football, led McGill-Toolen with 18 points.

White led the Cougars with 26 points, including 18 in the first half. Northview ends the year with a 15-11 record.
