Man Accused in Hospital Shooting Pleads Not Guilty

An 86-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his wife's nephew in an Augusta hospital room has pleaded not guilty to murder.

The Augusta Chronicle reports Charles Gorrell entered his plea Friday in Richmond County Superior Court.

Gorrell was arrested Oct. 16 in the death of 59-year-old Tim Grooms.

He was charged with felony murder, malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Authorities say Grooms had power of attorney over Gorrell's wife, who was hospitalized with pneumonia at the time of the shooting and later died.
