Knife Wielding GA Man Dies in Police Confrontation

CAIRO, Ga. (AP) -- Authorities say a man accused of threatening others with a knife in south Georgia has been killed.

Cairo Police Chief Keith Sandefur tells WALB-TV ( ) the unidentified man was chasing people through a parking lot with a knife Monday morning and responding officers tried convincing him to put the weapon down.

Sandefur says the man charged at a police officer and another officer tried blocking the man with his patrol car. Sandefur says the officer hit the man and he was later pronounced dead.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is probing the incident.

Cairo is about 35 miles north of Tallahassee, Fla.
