UPDATE - Houston Academy Wins Class 2A State Baseball Championship.

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Winning pitcher Kirk Maddox fired a complete game three-hitter and struck out nine to pick up the win in game one of the AHSAA Class 2A Baseball Championship Series Thursday morning at Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium.

The Raiders followed with a marathon 16-11 win in game 2 to sweep the series and capture the school’s first state baseball title since 1993. The second game took three hours and 14 minutes to complete.

Game 2: Maddox collected three hits and drove in two runs to pace Houston Academy’s 17-hit attack. He finished the day with five hits to go with his pitching gem and earned Class 2A Championship Series MVP.

Houston Academy (33-5), coached by Tony Kirkland, scored 13 runs in the first two innings but Section (31-13) answered with seven runs of its own. The Raiders got three more in the sixth inning and the Lions answered again with four more before Jacob Beachamp came in to shut down the rally pitching the final 1 2/3 innings. Brett Gilmore (6-2) relieved started Alec Reeves in the second inning and went the next 4 1/3 innings to get the win. He allowed two hits, three runs and struck out six.

The Raiders overcame 12 walks to get the win.

Taylor Lewis had four hits including two doubles, Gilmore also had two doubles and drove in five runs, Jeffrey Omohundro had a double, single and four RBIs.

Section managed eights hits with center fielder Chris Manning stroking a double and single to drive in two runs. Trent Linderman also had a single and two RBIs.

Losing pitcher was starter Cody Goff (8-1). Reliever Ross Anderson pitched the final 5 1/3 innings scattering six hits, allowing three runs and striking out six in a strong performance for Coach Drew Davis’ Lions.

Game 1: Maddox (8-1) walked only two and faced just 25 batters as Houston Academy (31-5) took a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series.

Center fielder Alec Reeves had a double and single and drove in three runs to pace Coach Tony Kirkland’s Raiders. He also scored twice and stole two bases. Maddox also had two hits and drove in two runs. First baseman Taylor Lewis had one hit and scored three runs.

Luke Anderson, Cody Goff and Bailey Atchley each had a single for Section (31-12). Heath McRae (7-2) started and suffered the loss. Anderson allowed only one hit over the final 4 2/3 innings for the Lions. He also walked eight and struck out nine but did not get a decision.

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Houston Academy erupted for 13 runs in the first two innings, then held on for a 16-11 win over Section in game two of the Class 2A State Baseball Championship Series. The Raiders swept the Lions at Riverwalk Stadium to capture the 2A State Championship.

After an 8-1 win in game one of the series as the home team, the Raiders stayed hot in game two, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. But, the Lions finally responded with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-4 lead.

Section's first lead of the title series was short lived, as the Raiders exploded for nine runs in the top of the second inning to take control. The Lions added two runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Raiders' lead to 13-7 after two innings.

Houston Academy added to it's lead in the sixth inning with three more runs. Despite four Section runs in the bottom of the sixth, H-A's advantage was too great, with the Raiders rolling to a 16-11 win and the school's first state title since 1993.

Maddox (8-1) walked only two and faced just 25 batters as Houston Academy (31-5) took a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-three series. Thomas Robinson hurled the final inning allowing no hits and walking one.

Center fielder Alec Reeves had a double and single and drove in three runs to pace Coach Tony Kirkland’s Raiders. He also scored twice and stole two bases. Maddox also had two hits and drove in two runs. First baseman Taylor Lewis had one hit and scored three runs.

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Houston Academy hasn't played for a state baseball championship since winning the Class 1A State Title in 1993. The Raiders seemed completely comfortable with the big stage on Thursday, beating Section 8-1 in game one of the Class 2A Championship Series at Riverwalk Stadium.

With the victory, the Raiders moved one win away from a state title. Houston Academy and Section will play game two of the best-of-three series on Thursday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery.

H-A took control early against the Lions on Thursday morning, scoring three runs in the first winning. Kirk Maddox made that lead stand up, allowing just one run during a complete game outing to claim the victory.
