HIV Segregation Ends at Alabama Women's Prison

Prisoners who are HIV positive will no longer be segregated at Julia Tutwiler Prison.

According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, eight HIV-positive female inmates were moved back into the general inmate population last month.

The department plans to do the same with male inmates next year.

The changes are the result of a lawsuit filed by HIV-positive inmates in 2011. The suit claimed the segregation policy violated those inmates' rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
