Panama City Beach, Florida - Gulf World Marine Park is heartbroken to share the news that the male Rough-toothed Dolphin that was born on June 27th died last night July 25, 2014 at 5:30pm.
After the birth, the mom/calf cooperative nursing behavior failed to occur. The mom and calf were then moved to a rehab pool so the staff could assist the mother with the feeding process.
Over the past 4 weeks the staff has been monitoring and assisting the mom to subsidize and complement her natural maternal role. The calf’s condition seemed to improve while he received 24 hour care and attention. Despite our best medical efforts the calf did not survive. Preliminary necropsy results show that the calf had a pulmonary abscess. Future histopathology results willdetermine the cause of the abscess. The management team would like to thank the staff for all their hard work and we understand how difficult it is to not achieve the desired success after putting forth such an unselfish and professional effort.
