"Last year almost 45% of the referrals that we gave folks that called in for needing assistance, had to do somewhat with utility assistance, you know paying for those utilities, " says David Duke, Executive Director of Wiregrass United Way.
"Its always our number one call that we receive here at 211 and its not just here in Wiregrass, the united way 211 but its the number 1 call in the state of Alabama, its the number one call in the nation too".
With the summer heat quickly approaching, calls regarding assistance paying cooling bills are on the rise.
"We get a lot of calls they might spike up, they are definitely going to spike up when the temperatures get up close to 100 degrees, like they are this week," says Duke.
In addition, Dothan Utilities and the Rescue Mission work together to offer assistance to those in need.
"We partner with Dothan utilities in order to help struggling families with their utility bills because especially in the summer you know bills increase so we just want to be able to provide assistance," says Cassie Gay, Education Program Director at Dothan Rescue Mission.
And they are not alone in helping others, the community can also chip in.
"You can just look at your monthly bill and there's a box you can check and you can donate whatever amount of funds that you feel necessary, whether its a dollar 5 dollars or 100 dollars anything would help and 100 percent of those funds go directly to those people in need".
An assistance that will allow places like 211 and the Rescue Mission help even more families.
Duke also says in addition to all the resources out there, to first talk to your electric company because most times they are willing to work with customers.
