MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama's Republican Party is refusing to change its rules to silence dissent after a college Republican chairwoman upset some older members by supporting gay marriage.

The State Republican Executive Committee cast a lopsided voice vote Saturday to reject a proposed rule change that said no member of the party's steering committee may publicly oppose any resolution passed by the party's executive committee.

The proposed rule change stemmed from the chairwoman of the College Republican Federation of Alabama, Stephanie Petelos, supporting the Supreme Court decision overturning the Defense of Marriage Act.

Petelos says she's happy with the support she received and hopes the controversy doesn't scare people away from party.

After the vote, Chief Justice Roy Moore told the group he will leave the Republican Party if it ever embraces same-sex marriage.
