Furloughs and Firefighters

Furloughs on Fort Rucker are underway and the post's first responders are not exempt. Some of the more than 2,200 civilian employees required to take days off are firefighters.

The eleven furlough days will last through the end of September. Mutual aid agreements with surrounding communities are essential to have enough manpower during emergencies.

Assistant Fire Chief Daleville Robert Jackson said, "If they have an incident on post and they need our assistance we are going to give them all the assets we can give them and resources we have to help them out as much as possible. Because in the past if we needed them they have lent a helping hand."

The furlough days are the effects of a more than $30 billion shortfall in the Department of Defense budget.
