TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Three months after a Connecticut school shooting state lawmakers in Florida are still grappling with how to respond.
Legislators say they want to beef up security in the state's public schools. But it's still not clear what bills will pass this session.
A Senate panel on Tuesday approved a measure which would allow local governments to ask voters if they want to pay more money to help beef up school security and provide mental health referral services.
But some Republicans said they were troubled with the bill (SB 514).
Sen. Bill Galvano and the Senate education budget chief said the Senate will come up with extra money to help schools with security, but it is unlikely the state would put up enough cash to place school resource officers in every school.
