An online petition to bring back the cancelled “Star Trek” TV series “Enterprise” is gathering thousands of followers.

In 1987, “Star Trek: The Next Generation” re-launched “Star Trek” back into television, after the original science fiction series was cancelled by NBC in 1969. “The Next Generation” became a smash hit and was followed by spin-offs “Deep Space Nine,” “Voyager,” and “Enterprise” on TV. While three of those four series lasted a full seven seasons as planned, “Enterprise” was cancelled in 2005 when the United Paramount Network and the Warner Brothers network ended and merged into the CW network.

There was a letter campaign and other efforts to try to bring “Enterprise” back immediately after its cancellation, but the science-fiction franchise loved by millions wouldn’t be seen again until a new motion picture with new staff, cast, and crew hit theaters in 2009. 2013 marks the eighth year that no “Star Trek” series has been on the air, after eighteen consecutive years of "Trek" that began with “The Next Generation.”

Now, fans and even some involved with the show itself are growing a petition to bring the series back through Netflix. On Facebook, a group called the “Star Trek Enterprise Season 5 - Netflix [C]ampaign” has over 3,100 likes and is continuing to grow. Doug Drexler, who worked on design and effects for many modern Star Trek series, is one of the backers of this goal.

Supporters suggest than fans watch the four seasons of “Enterprise” on Netflix to get the streaming video service’s attention. There is some precedent, with the cult comedy show “Arrested Development” soon re-launching on Netflix after being cancelled by the FOX network years ago. Netflix also has some original, scripted programming of its own.

“Star Trek: Enterprise” starred Scott Bakula, Connor Trinneer and Jolene Blalock and was set nearly a century before the original Star Trek series that starred William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. It followed the adventures of earth’s first deep-space, high-warp-speed vessel before the formation of the United Federation of Planets. Many fans of the show consider the show’s last season that aired to be one its finest., as it included many call-backs and tie-ins to other Star Trek films and television series.
