Ex-State Worker Sentenced in Gas for Drugs Scheme

An ex-Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice lieutenant has pleaded guilty to theft charges in a scheme that involved trading gasoline for cocaine.

Jerry Byrd was sentenced in Chatham County Superior Court Thursday to five years of probation and is ordered to pay $1,000 restitution to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Authorities say 42-year-old Byrd used a fuel card between 30 and 40 times to make unauthorized fuel purchases for his private vehicle.

Officials say he also fueled the cars of drug dealers in exchange for cocaine.

The Savannah Morning News reports a judge also ordered him to serve 200 hours of community service and participate in substance abuse treatment.
